Blog 29. September 2026

Most companies that call themselves digital have bought a remote control and mistaken it for an operating system.

A CRM here. A LinkedIn tool there. A chatbot on the website, a newsletter platform, a calendar with a booking link. Every tool can do something. None of them knows what the others are doing. And at the end of the day, the owner sits at the laptop at night holding it all together.

That is exactly what I talked about in the latest episode of Cyprus Business and Beyond. My guest was not a marketing consultant. It was George Georgiou, who runs Krypto, one of the best known smart home and security companies in Cyprus. His clients include banks, ports and airports. One idea from our conversation has stayed with me ever since: A home should not respond to commands. It should recognize that something is happening that should not be happening, and stop it.

Replace home with business. That is pretty much what we build at ZoeGrowth.

A lamp that listens to Alexa is not a system

George describes how easy it is today to buy a lamp for a few dollars that responds to voice commands. Every visitor is impressed. But the house is not safer or more efficient because of it. It is just louder.

In sales, it looks like this. One AI tool writes LinkedIn messages. Another one summarizes meetings. Impressive in the demo. But when a prospect hears nothing for 9 days after the first call, nobody notices. None of the tools is responsible for it.

The number that changed Krypto’s business

For decades, Krypto protected people from burglars. Then they looked at their own data. In 15 years, not a single death from a burglary. But 9 deaths from fires, caused by forgotten appliances or food left cooking while people were asleep.

They had spent years solving the wrong problem. Solving it well, but still the wrong one.

We see the same pattern in companies with 10 to 50 employees. Everyone talks about needing more leads. Look closer and the leads are usually there. They get lost somewhere between first contact and proposal. Inquiries sit in the inbox. Nobody follows up. Nobody is quite sure who is in charge. That is the fire in the kitchen. Quiet, unspectacular and expensive.

The solar system nobody misses

Many homeowners in Cyprus only find out from their electricity bill that their solar system has not been running for weeks. The reason is simple. The system has its own app, and nobody opens it.

Krypto’s answer is not another device. It is one system that notifies you in the app you already use every day.

In almost every company we analyze, there is at least one dashboard nobody has opened in months. The numbers in it would have mattered. Smart infrastructure means the information comes to you. Not the other way around.

Shutters that always stay closed

Krypto surveyed 200 people who have electric shutters and curtains at home. Almost all of them rarely open them. Only when guests come over or on a Sunday. Not because they don’t care about the view. Because it is inconvenient. If you get home at 8 in the evening, you don’t open something you will have to close again in the morning.

The technology was there. The benefit never arrived, because someone had to remember it every single day.

That is the story of follow up in most small and mid sized companies. Everyone knows they should follow up. The CRM even has a reminder function. It still only happens when there is time to spare. Which means rarely. A system that depends on daily discipline is not a system.

Where people keep the final say

I asked George whether all this automation goes too far. His answer was clear. Whether you leave the lights on when you go out is your business. But if water is leaking in the utility room and nobody is home, the system shuts off the water supply. No questions asked. The party lighting is still yours to control.

This distinction is the most important part of any automation. Critical, recurring tasks run without you. Everything that needs judgment and relationships stays with a person. For our clients, that can mean an inquiry gets confirmed within minutes, qualified and routed to the right person. How a proposal is negotiated is still decided by a human.

On an island, trust is the only currency

Toward the end, George talked about doing business in Cyprus. It is a small island. Everyone knows everyone. Disappoint people once or twice and the market stops believing you. Krypto still gets leads today from clients who installed a system 20 years ago. And right now, his team is replacing smart glass film in 3 large buildings. A company from abroad had supplied it. After 8 months, it stopped working.

That is the warning for anyone using AI in sales. Automated messages that sound mass produced save you time today and cost you your reputation tomorrow. In any market where referrals carry a large share of the business, the rules are not so different from an island. Automation has to feel like you. Otherwise it is the smart film that fails after 8 months.

The company that runs without its founder

The most honest moment of the episode: George admits he was the bottleneck for a long time. Almost every decision went through his desk. In 2018, he and his team started building the company so it could work without him. His reasoning stuck with me. If you serve 50,000 clients, including banks and military sites, and your company would struggle the day after you die, you are letting all of those people down.

Since then, according to George, sales and profit have grown by 120%.

For me, that is the strongest argument for infrastructure. Not technology for its own sake. A business where knowledge, processes and client care don’t live in one person’s head.

What we take from this at ZoeGrowth

George builds homes that think ahead. We build the same thing for sales and marketing.

Krypto does not design a smart home around devices. They start with the question of where energy is being lost. We start the same way. First comes positioning: Who should be reaching out to you, and why you? Then lead generation, qualification, follow up, all the way to the close. Only when it is clear where the fire is do we connect the pieces into one system. With automation and AI where they take work off your plate. With a person where trust is built.

The goal is the same as Krypto’s. The system works in the background, and ideally you forget it is there. You just notice that less falls through the cracks and more deals get closed.
